Lot details

The Tsuda Family, Kyoto, c. 1900-1935. The black-lacquered ground finely decorated in gold foil and inlays of mother-of-pearl with a bird descending on a palatial building nestled between trees and rockwork, and to the reverse with a crab, crane, and butterflies in a lotus pond. The short sides, neck, and matching stopper are similarly decorated with diapered designs.

Provenance: From the collection of Chip and Muffy Matthews, St. Louis, USA. Churchill “Chip” Matthews, Jr. (1940-2021) and Martha “Muffy” Matthews were American collectors of Chinese snuff bottles who traveled extensively. Chip was a US army veteran, who founded the noted medical company Wrymark Inc. in 1989. In 2013, their private garden was featured by St. Louis Homes and Lifestyles as the ‘Garden of the Year’.
Condition:
Excellent condition with only minor old wear, microscopic nicks and losses.

The two bases finely painted in red lacquer with an apocryphal Qianlong mark.

Expert’s note: The majority of this type of lacquer snuff bottle was made in Japan for a collectors’ market after the 1860s, with the butterfly bottles in particular dating from the first half of the 20th century. See Bob C. Stevens, The Collector’s Book of Snuff Bottles, nos. 785, 787, and 793.

Intended Spend and Bid Limits

When you register to bid in an online auction, you will need to share your intended maximum spending budget for the auction. We will then review your intended spend and set a bid limit for you. Once you have pre-registered for a live online auction, you can see your intended spend and bid limit by going to 'Account Settings' and clicking on 'Live Bidding Registrations'. 

Your bid limit will be the maximum amount you can bid during the auction. Your bid limit is for the hammer price and is not affected by the buyer’s premium and VAT.  For example, if you have a bid limit of €1,000 and place two winning bids for €300 and €200, then you will only be able to bid €500 for the rest of the auction. If you try to place a bid that is higher than €500, you will not be able to do so.
