A BROWN-GROUND SILK EMBROIDERED NINE-DRAGON ROBE, JIFU, QING DYNASTY

Lot details

China, 1800-1850. Finely couched in gold-wrapped threads with the prescribed nine five-clawed dragons writhing and pursuing flaming pearls amid satin-stitched lingzhi-shaped clouds interspersed with flying bats, Buddhist symbols, and peony blossoms. Further worked in forbidden stitch with auspicious symbols, all above the terrestrial diagram surrounded by crashing waves with Buddhist symbols and precious objects, below lishui stripe, also embroidered in forbidden stitch with rotating bats and peony blossoms. The black-ground horseshoe cuffs and collar similarly decorated with dragons and bats.

Provenance: From a private collection in France, acquired from Linda Wrigglesworth in the 1990s. Finding her passion for Chinese textiles in 1976, when encountering her first dragon robe, Linda Wrigglesworth opened her gallery in 1978, and over the following decades became one of the world’s leading experts in antique Chinese costumes and textiles, helping to buy and sell pieces to private collections and public institutions worldwide. She has written countless articles and curated countless exhibitions. In 2008 she retired from her business and sold her private collection of Imperial textiles at Christie’s New York.
Condition: Good condition with expected wear, minor soiling, few loose threads, small tears, tiny losses, and minor fading.

During the Qing dynasty, court costume was strictly codified to represent rank and status. Textiles of bright yellow were only worn by the Emperor, Empress, Dowager Empress whilst other members of the imperial family wore varying shades of yellow. Brown, considered as a ‘lesser yellow’, was worn by other members of the imperial clan, including the emperor’s sons-in-law and imperial dukes.

Your bid limit will be the maximum amount you can bid during the auction. Your bid limit is for the hammer price and is not affected by the buyer’s premium and VAT.  For example, if you have a bid limit of €1,000 and place two winning bids for €300 and €200, then you will only be able to bid €500 for the rest of the auction. If you try to place a bid that is higher than €500, you will not be able to do so.
