A LARGE CELADON AND RUSSET JADE ‘MONKEYS AND PEACHES’ BRUSH WASHER, XI, 17TH-18TH CENTURY
十七至十八世紀青玉留皮猴子摘桃筆洗

China. The deep vessel naturalistically carved in openwork to form a giant peach with three monkeys climbing playfully around gnarled branches with fruiting smaller peaches encircling the sides, the fruit and leaves neatly incised and well detailed. The smoothly polished translucent stone is of a deep celadon hue with dark gray and black shadings, russet patches and veins, as well as cloudy inclusions.
Provenance: From an English private collection.
Condition: Very good condition with minor old wear, scattered small nibbles, and minuscule nicks. The stone with natural inclusions and fissures, some of which have developed into small hairline cracks.

This work recalls the folk legend of an impish stone monkey who came to life and brazenly stole the peaches of immortality from the ruler of heaven, the Jade Emperor.
