The iron sukashi (pierced in openwork) tsuba of marugata shape, with a kozuka and kogai hitsu-ana, finely worked in gold, silver, and suaka (copper) iro-e takazogan, depicting two Chinese sages, one seated at a table studying and the other standing, beneath a pine tree and swirling clouds, all enclosed within a textured gilt rim. Signed on both sides 藻柄子 入道宗典製 江州彦根住 MOGARASHI NYUDO SOTEN sei Goshu Hikone ju.

Mogarashi Nyudo Soten was a highly regarded Japanese artist specializing in sword fittings, particularly tsuba (sword guards). His work is celebrated for its exquisite craftsmanship and intricate designs. While specific details about his life, such as birth and death dates, are limited, it is known that Soten was active during the Edo period. His works are often characterized by their detailed engravings and the use of various metals and alloys. His signature, ‘Mogarashi Nyudo Soten sei’, can be found on many of his pieces. Soten's tsuba frequently depict scenes from Japanese history, mythology, and nature. His works are highly sought after by collectors and museums worldwide and are considered among the finest examples of Japanese sword fittings.
