Tibet. Gold and distemper on cloth. Mounted on a silk brocade frame. The central deity trampling on a prostrate figure atop a lotus pedestal, holding his attributes the kartika, kapala, and ghandi stick. The wrathful deity with a fierce expression, the wild hair secured by a skull tiara, backed by a flaming mandorla. He is surrounded by bodhisattvas, teachers, wrathful protectors, and guardians. All within a verdant landscape with craggy rockwork and thick swirling clouds.
Inscriptions: To the reverse, ‘Om Ah Hum’.
Provenance: From an old private collection in Bavaria, Germany, assembled between 1965 and 1985. The reverse inscribed ‘Mahakala’ and with an inventory number ‘208Ee9’.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, little soiling and creasing, the brocade with loose threads and few minor tears.
